Quebec's Montmorency Falls in October and Its 487 Steps
What the falls, the cable car and the Côte-de-Beaupré stops cost, and the hours they keep, in the short October window to 1 Nov 2026.
Por Joris van der MeerQuebec City on foot, past the postcard

The water goes over the lip in a single white curtain and drops 83 m off a dark grey cliff into a mist-filled basin at the St Lawrence shore, 15 minutes from Old Québec. A slender cable footbridge crosses the crest and 487 steps run down the rock beside it. Through October the maples on both cliffs are red and gold.
The park and where the coach stops
Parc de la Chute-Montmorency charges $13.90 for adult daily access to 1 Nov 2026; 17 and under go free. The site is open daily year-round, and the services on it run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from 13 Oct to 1 Nov 2026. Book group rates and guided visits through Sépaq.

Coaches come in at the lower La Manufacture entrance, where the group drop-off and the large car park are. The welcome centre is the repurposed red-brick mill at the foot of the falls: tall arched windows, a ticket desk, loos and racks of Québec-made clothing inside. Walking in is free and souvenirs run $15 to $80. Staff handle group entry here, and the cable-car station is attached to the building. Buy your access at the desk, then decide how you are getting up the cliff.

The cable car and the 487 steps
Téléphérique de la Chute-Montmorency climbs the cliff face in a glass-walled cabin, the full waterfall in the window and Île d'Orléans and the river flats behind. Cabins load continuously. It is the single biggest queue point on the site, and booking online skips the window queue. A return is $14.95 for an adult and $7.48 for ages 6 to 17, free under 6. It runs daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to 1 Nov 2026, then shuts from 2 Nov to 18 Dec.

The Escalier panoramique is the free way between the basin and the clifftop, included in park access, and it has the best angle on the water. The 487 steps zig-zag up wet black rock in timber and steel, with small railed platforms jutting out over the gorge and viewing decks on the way. In October the spray drifts across the treads and the steps stay slick. Wear flat shoes with grip. The landings are narrow, and a coachload should go down in small waves.

Standing over the crest
Pont suspendu de la Chute-Montmorency is strung straight across the lip, white water pouring away directly under the mesh deck. Park entry covers it and there is nothing to book. The bridge works one way in practice, and it bottlenecks when two coaches arrive together, so cross it before the middle of the day. Just below it, the Belvédère de la Baronne turns you around for the view back at the staircase.

The lower basin walk
The Passerelle contemplative is the newer half of the site, finished in the 2026 works: a long, wide, low footbridge on old railway piers crossing the river at basin level, with stepped sitting platforms facing the falls. The deck absorbs a coachload without crowding, and the platforms are where you sit and watch the curtain from below.
From there the Sentier des Résurgences runs upstream through woods over flat slabs and rapids, 2.5 km return and easy, with many stairs along the way. The much-publicised semi-submerged walkway was abandoned by Sépaq and never opened.
Food on site in late October
Sandwicherie de la Station is the only food on site still open daily this late in the season, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to 1 Nov 2026. It is a counter inside the brick Manufacture building, pastries delivered daily under glass, paper-wrapped sandwiches, big windows toward the basin. A sandwich and a coffee cost $6 to $16. There are no reservations and a line forms the moment a coach lands. The Pain de Sucre dairy bar and the Boischatel-side La Redoute snack bar have shut for the year.

Manoir Montmorency sits on the clifftop above the falls, white clapboard with a red roof and a long wraparound veranda, lawn and flowerbeds in front. The interpretation space, the shop and the loos are open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to 1 Nov. The restaurant-terrace closed for the season on 12 Oct 2026, leaving a single ticketed six-course fall brunch on 25 Oct at $69 for an adult and $34.50 for ages 6 to 12. Mains are $25 to $45 when the dining room runs. Phone 418-663-3330 before you build any October group lunch around this address.

When to go in October
Go in the morning. The cabins fill as the coaches land and the footbridge jams when two parties meet on it. Walk down the staircase first and ride back up, and you get the crest and the lower basin before the day thickens. The half-day runs out of the city operate seven days a week, so the arrival pattern repeats whatever day you pick.
Taking a coach from the city
A tour buys you the drop-off at the lower entrance and the second stop up the coast without a car or a parking decision. The current season on these runs goes from 5 Oct 2026 to 31 Oct 2027, and they are booking steadily. Book ahead. If you drive yourself, you pay access at the Manufacture desk on arrival.
Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré and the canyon
Sanctuaire Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré sits 20 minutes further up the coast and is the standard second stop on a Montmorency half-day. Twin grey granite spires stand over a long nave; inside there are gold mosaic ceiling panels, deep blue stained glass and columns hung with crutches left by pilgrims. Entry is free on a donation, which is why tours can afford to include it. It opens Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. Coach parking is on site. Reserve guided tours in French, English and Spanish on 418-827-3781; they are charged separately.

Canyon Sainte-Anne is the like-for-like swap when Montmorency feels busy: a 74 m waterfall squeezed through a narrow granite gorge, three suspension footbridges at different heights, scoured potholes in the rock, yellow birch and red maple overhanging. The colour is at its peak right now. The 2026 season ends on 25 Oct, hours 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until then. Entry is $15 for an adult and $10 for ages 6 to 17, free under 6; the Air Canyon zip is $11 extra. Parking is free, and parties of 20 or more can ask for a group rate.

Two workshops for a wet afternoon

Albert Gilles Copper Art & Museum is a Côte-de-Beaupré économusée, a dim workshop-museum hung with huge hammered-copper repoussé panels of religious scenes, the craftsman's punches and mallets left on a worn bench. Admission is free and it opens daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through autumn. Pieces in the shop start at $20. It takes bus groups directly.
Atelier Paré is beside the basilica: carved wooden figures from Québec legends among the trees of a small garden, chisel-marked pine faces, an open carving workshop with shavings on the floor. Summer hours ended on 14 Oct 2026 and it reopens on 18 Oct on winter hours, Wednesday to Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., indoor museum only. Entry is $5 to $10 for an adult. Capacity is limited, so call 418-827-3992 before you bring a group.
Across to Île d'Orléans
Chocolaterie de l'Île d'Orléans (Sainte-Pétronille) works out of a 200-year-old white ancestral house with a veranda, trays of hand-dipped chocolates inside and cones dipped in dark chocolate at the counter, $5 to $15. From the garden you look down to the river and across at Montmorency from the far bank. It opens year-round, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from September. The house is small and a group fills it, so stagger your entry.

Cassis Monna & Filles pours deep-purple blackcurrant crème and liqueur in a stone-walled cellar, bottles lined on wood shelves, the Île d'Orléans bridge and the river through the windows. Check the calendar before you drive out. The cellar and boutique run 13 to 25 Oct 2026, Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; La Monnaguette restaurant is closed for the year and the ice-cream counter depends on the weather. Tastings and boutique bottles are $10 to $40. They take booked groups in the cellar.

Is it worth it
It suits a visitor with half a day and the legs for 487 wet steps, or $14.95 for the cable car instead. The falls, the crossing over the crest and the basin walk are the visit; the basilica, the canyon and the workshops fill out the rest of a coast run.
Before you go
The October window is short and the closures are uneven: the Manoir restaurant-terrace, the Canyon Sainte-Anne season and the Cassis cellar all stop well before the park does, so phone or check dates before a group turns up anywhere outside the falls. Book the cable car and any guided visit ahead. See the Quebec guide and the Quebec hotel search.
Antes de ir
How much does it cost to visit Montmorency Falls in October 2026?
Adult daily access to Parc de la Chute-Montmorency is $13.90 to 1 Nov 2026, and 17 and under are free. The cable car is extra at $14.95 for an adult return and $7.48 for ages 6 to 17, free under 6. The staircase, the suspension bridge and the lower basin walk are included in park access.
Can I skip the cable car and walk up instead?
Yes. The Escalier panoramique is 487 steps with viewing decks and is included in park access. In October the treads are slick with spray, so wear flat shoes with grip. The landings are narrow, so split a large group into small waves on the way down.
Is anywhere open to eat at the falls in late October?
Sandwicherie de la Station inside La Manufacture is the only food on site open daily this late, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to 1 Nov 2026, at $6 to $16 for a sandwich and a coffee. The Manoir Montmorency restaurant-terrace closed for the season on 12 Oct 2026, with one ticketed six-course fall brunch on 25 Oct at $69 for an adult and $34.50 for ages 6 to 12.
Should I book a half-day coach tour ahead?
Book ahead. The runs operate seven days a week and are filling steadily. The current season runs 5 Oct 2026 to 31 Oct 2027. A tour covers the drop-off at the lower La Manufacture entrance and the second stop up the coast at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré.
What changes after 1 Nov 2026?
The site is open daily year-round, but the 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. service hours and the $13.90 daily access window run only to 1 Nov 2026. La Manufacture keeps the same dates, and the cable car shuts from 2 Nov to 18 Dec.
